Experience:

Mr. Nevio Medeot began his professional career in the Electronics & Telecommunications industry. He began to work for the OGS in 1980, maturing expertise in the field of sensors and microcontrollers and gaining far-reaching experience in dealing with marine instrumentation in the erstwhile “Laboratori Marini” (Marine Laboratories), the “Laboratori Elettronici” (Electronics Laboratories) and the “Centro di Taratura Oceanografico” (Oceanographic Calibration Centre) of the Institute.

In the 1990’s, Mr. Medeot was in charge of the group responsible for the management and installation of instrumentation in the Institute’s “Dipartimento di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale” (Department of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics). He is one of the architects of the MAMBO (Monitoraggio AMBientale Operativo) meteo-oceanographic buoy, an in-house data buoy designed in 1998 and still in production.

Since 2002, Mr. Medeot is in charge of the revived “Centro di Taratura Oceanografico” (Oceanographic Calibration Centre) of the OGS which he personally helped to set up. He and his group have experimented, developed and successfully applied procedures and protocols, adhering to international standards of excellence, for the calibration, control and testing of instrumentation used for measuring many of the major oceanographic parameters of interest.

Mr. Medeot has received training in the USA in the operation and maintenance of autonomous underwater vehicles – specifically, gliders, and is currently part of the OGS Glider Team and a member of EGO, the European Gliding Observatories initiative. He has actively participated in numerous national and international projects, and in many oceanographic cruises and surveys.

Skills & Interests:

Always interested in the development of new instrumentation and in marine technologies, Mr. Nevio Medeot collaborates with different groups in various Italian and European projects, offering expertise in the following areas:

  •          the determination, refinement and documentation of calibration techniques and procedures for instruments and sensors used to measure the principal oceanographic parameters;
  •          the application of metrological principles and international standards for guaranteeing quality in oceanographic measurements.
  •          the calibration, testing and validation of devices/sensors used for acquiring meteorological and oceanographic data;
  •          performance testing for prototypes and new instrumentation;
  •          data quality assurance;
  •          integrity testing and assessment of new instrumentation;
  •          the management, calibration and maintenance of laboratory reference instrumentation and standards relevant to the measurement of oceanographic parameters.
Major projects:

Currently active in:

JERICO (Towards a Joint European Research Infrastructure network for Coastal Observatories), funded by the European Union within the framework of its Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7);

EMRP (European Metrology Research Programme) "ENV05-Ocean: metrology for ocean salinity and acidity", a EURAMET (European Association of National Metrology Institutes) Programme project;

RITMARE (Ricerca ITaliana per il MARE), a national Research & Technology programme funded by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, the national research council) of Italy.
